LTTA -C6
“ROTTERDAM HARBOUR”

LTTA –C6 was held in Dordrecht, the Netherlands from 6 March to 10 February 2017. Insula College hosted 21 pupils from Germany and their three teachers. The pupils stayed in host families.
The name of the project activity was “Rotterdam Harbour”. The students worked in groups of combined nationalities to develop lesson plans for younger pupils at a primary school. They presented their lessons in Dutch to 70 pupils from primary school classes of the Johan Friso School in Dordrecht, who visited the Insula College.
There were 10 groups of pupils, each with their own pitch. The pitches covered the following subjects:
  1. Exchange programs: Erasmus +
  2. Exchange programs: own experience
  3. Sustainability in the Harbour of Rotterdam
  4. Harbour of Rotterdam in figures
  5. Economical impact of the Harbour of Rotterdam
  6. Maasvlakte 2: the creation of...
  7. Maasvlakte 2: environmental issues
  8. Maasvlakte 2: archeology
  9. Computerisation of the Harbour of Rotterdam
  10. Containerships
After taking a quiz, the groups could pick the subject of their choice. The pupils visited Futureland in the Maasvlakte, were they were taught about the harbour of Rotterdam and the making of the Maasvlakte in particular.
During the project the pupils were working to make a “pitch” (short and interactive presentation) for the younger pupils (age 10-12).
A class of 20 pupils of the Insula College (age 12-13) listened to the pitches and gave feedback. After that, there was time to adjust the pitches according to the feedback.
The next day, the younger pupils visited the pitches, in total 10 groups of each 10 pupils. In the end each younger pupil decide which pitch was the best/interesting/most informative, by putting a fiche in the box of the concerning group. The group with the most fiches in the end is was the winner.
It was amazing to see the creativity and enthusiasm of the pupils while working on their pitch. The results in the end were great and the teachers present were really impressed.
The younger pupils were all focused till the end. Their feedback was about the presentations was that they had a wonderful time and learned a lot about the harbour of Rotterdam and about exchange programs in general. They especially liked the activities the older pupils used to test them and stimulate them to learn.
They were also interested in participating in exchange programs and projects in the future.

Besides the pitches the pupils also visited the city hall of Dordrecht.
