Monday, after a visit to Halde Hoheward (http://www.landschaftspark-hoheward.de), a mining rubble hill with a height of 150 mtrs, with a horizon observatory (a kind of modern Stonehenge) and a giant sun dial, the pupils from Insula college in Dordrecht (http://www.insulacollege.nl) arrived at the WoBoGe school in Recklinghausen (http://www.woboge.de). The pupils met up with their exchange partners and after a visit to their house, we visited the Christmas market together in the evening.
Tuesday, the day started with a schedule to visit classes for the Dutch pupils. The Dutch pupils taught Dutch to the German pupils (who take Dutch at school), they were in English, Maths, Philopophy, PE and Pedagogical classes. We had a traditional hot German lunch together, as Germans usually have their main meal at lunch time! Then the German pupils and their Dutch exchange pupils formed groups to explore Recklinghausen and make a presentation of all the sites not to be missed, and two extra, and prepared for an interview on video and original photographs of the sites in Recklinghausen. During the evening, our exchange pupils had the chance to get to know each other better during a bowling event.
Wednesday, we left from Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof to visit Essen. In the surrounding area, about 300 mines were exploited at one time, leaving traces in the landscape, affecting the population and so on. During a professional and very informative tour of the largest and most productive mine, the Zeche Zollverein(https://www.zollverein.de), pupils prepared for the project day on Thursday and the presentation of the various aspects of mining in the Ruhrgebiet on Friday. In the mining plant, the pupils got the chance to experience what it is to be a miner, handling heavy tools, handling real pieces of coal, seeing how coal is washed and much more. After that, the city of Essen was visited.
On Thursday, the pupils gathered in the computer rooms to do research and prepare for their presentations to a number of German classes in the assembly hall of WoBoGe.
On Friday, after various presentations, with varying topics (Mining in the Ruhr area, working conditions, the effect of mining on the environment, the international Ruhr area, Industry in the Ruhr area, then and now) and a competition for the best video/photos of the city tour, the pupils will have lunch with each other and then travel back to Dordrecht.
